Window Awnings
Window awnings can reduce solar heat gain in the summer by up to 65% on south-facing windows and 77% on west-facing windows. You can use an awning to shade one window or have an awning custom-made to shade the entire side of your house.
In the past, most awnings were made of metal or canvas, which need to be re-covered every five to seven years. Today, awnings are made from synthetic fabrics—such as acrylic and polyvinyl laminates—that are water-repellent and treated to resist mildew and fading. Whatever the fabric, you should choose one that is opaque and tightly woven. A light-colored awning will reflect more sunlight.
Awnings require ventilation to keep hot air from becoming trapped around the window. Grommets (eyelets) or other openings along the tops and sides of an awning can provide ventilation. The awning may also open to the sides or top to vent hot air.
A small, horizontal awning will completely shade a south-facing window during the summer. An east- or west-facing window needs an awning that extends down to cover a large percentage of the window. Sideless awnings, called Venetian awnings, can be adjusted as the angle of the sun changes. Venetian awnings, however, are usually not effective at blocking direct sunlight on south-facing windows. Hood awnings with sides added to block out additional sun are more effective. Hip awnings project out and down to accommodate casement windows that open outward.
You can roll up adjustable or retractable awnings in the winter to let the sun warm the house. New hardware, such as lateral arms, makes the rolling up process quite easy.
The United Kingdom
The United Kingdom is showing increasing demand for women’s plus size fashions, with 47% of UK’s female population currently at US size 14 or larger. Traditionally, the plus size category in the UK has been a low priority, “afterthought” market that has been characterized by limited product availability, very few lines and sidelined fashion trends.
More recently the combination of an aging population and expanding waste lines, has many retailers taking notice of the growing demand and need for fashionable plus size women’s apparel. Today’s plus-size women in the UK, similar to their American counterparts, are looking for fashionable, stylish clothing that will flatter their body types. For them the issue is no longer simply finding plus size clothing, it is a matter of finding fashionable plus size clothing that meets their needs and life styles.
Business prospects for U.S. suppliers of women’s plus size apparel have never been better in the UK, given current market demand and the strong purchasing power of the British currency. At $30.2 billion dollars, women’s apparel accounts for 82% of the market’s total value in 2002, and the share has tended to increase since the start of the decade. Imports into the UK are heading toward complete domination of the mainstream sectors of the clothing market as major UK manufacturing and retail groups choose to source their production, (for their own-label supply) abroad. Hong Kong is the leading supplier to the UK, and this applies to many of the women’s wear categories, such as trousers/jeans, blouses, skirts, overcoats etc. China is increasing in importance, and Sri Lanka is the most important source from the Near East. However, these imports tend to produce a bias towards the supposed ‘average’ woman, and not plus size.
The US exported $27.3.million dollars worth of apparel to the UK in 2003. There are numerous opportunities for US manufacturers in this market as British woman are far from satisfied with the availability of larger size clothing. The US apparel industry has catered to this particular market for years, starting in the mid-seventies with stores like ‘The Forgotten Woman’. In addition, well known US designers such as Liz Claiborne have catered to the plus size woman. Claiborne developed the ‘Elizabeth’ range for this particular market.

Anastacio León
Traditional Glass and Tinworker Demonstrator
Anastasio Leon working with glass and tin.Imuris, Sonora, some forty miles south of Nogales, is home to a folk art tradition that is unique in Mexico. A few families still make glass crosses, boxes, and frames for holy pictures. Floral and geometric designs are painted on the back of the glass in both opaque and translucent colors. The glass is then mounted in tin strips and backed with crumpled tinfoil, giving a wonderful shimmering quality to the translucent paint. While this art form used to be made in other parts of Mexico and the American Southwest, and while tin picture frames and niches are enjoying a revival of sorts in northern New Mexico, it is only in northern Sonora that folk artists are still making reverse-painted glass in any quantity.
Anastacio has participated in the annual Fiesta de Tumacácori since 1995. It is with great pleasure that we now include him as a member of our rotating staff of demonstrators. He and his family are true folk artists, serving specific communities by creating traditional kinds of beauty.
In 1987, the Balabushka family agreed to allow The Adam Cue Company to continue to make Balabushka Cues. The Balabushka Cue is by far the best selling cue in the industry. In keeping with the style and dignity of Mr. Balabushka, the Adam Cue Company created cues that reflect his originals that sell upwards in the tens of thousands of dollars.
Pechauer Cues process begins with a commitment to total quality control, starting with Jerry Pechauer himself selecting the Maple logs that make-up different parts of the pool cue. Each J. Pechauer Custom Pool Cue starts with a select piece of hard-rock Maple from which the shaft is born. Then each shaft is married to butt sections of either bird's-eye/curly Maple, Ebony, Tulip wood, Cocobolo, Bacote and other exotic woods. It all comes together with quality strictly controlled at each step of the way. The meticulous assembly, precision fit, a flawless finish and a balance and feel that is unmatched anywhere to create the J. Pechauer Custom Pool Cue.

JACKSONVILLE, Fla.—A joint operation by ICE, the National Football League (NFL) and the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office at Super Bowl XXXIX seized about 20,000 counterfeit items valued at more than $5 million.
Called “Operation End Zone,” the initiative has also resulted in three arrests and one conviction thus far. It was launched more than a year ago to specifically target criminal organizations and individuals selling counterfeit merchandise in the months and days leading up to the Super Bowl. The effort intensified as game day, which was February 6, approached.
In the initial phases of Operation End Zone, the ICE Intellectual Property Rights (IPR) Coordination Center in Washington, D.C., and the ICE Office of Investigations in Jacksonville produced a brochure on counterfeit goods in conjunction with the NFL. This brochure and other materials were issued to more than 100 businesses in the area involved in the import/export of commodities and local sales. The brochure was also included in the Super Bowl Host Committee’s magazine and distributed widely to solicit help from the public and from those authorized to sell Super Bowl merchandise.
ICE agents in Jacksonville also conducted numerous outreach presentations at Super Bowl Host Committee meetings and other business forums to educate the public and business community leaders about the ongoing anti-counterfeiting enforcement initiative.
These outreach efforts paid dividends as NFL investigators, ICE agents and local law enforcement officials received substantial assistance from the local business community in identifying purveyors of counterfeit goods. Investigators seized thousand of counterfeit NFL jerseys, caps and other souvenirs being sold at flea markets, souvenir stands and from the backs of vehicles for cut-rate prices.
In a single two-day enforcement action in January, agents and officers seized more than 5,500 counterfeit items, including knock-off NFL properties, Oakley sunglasses, batteries and purses from vendors in Jacksonville. The more than 20,000 counterfeit goods seized in the operation have filled local law enforcement warehouses in Jacksonville. Two federal criminal indictments have resulted. One of the defendants has pleaded guiland CBP have seized more than $600 million worth of counterfeit goods from FY 1998 through FY 2004.

Gout Drug Shows Promise
Injected rilonacept effective in easing pain, study finds
(SOURCE: American College of Rheumatology, news release, Nov. 7, 2007)
FRIDAY, Nov. 9 (HealthDay News) -- A drug called rilonacept (IL-1 Trap) may reduce disease activity and pain in patients with chronic active gout.
That's according to a non-randomized, single-blind, placebo-controlled study of 10 patients, average age 62, who had gout for an average of 13 years.
The study was led by Dr. Robert Terkeltaub of the VA Medical Center and University of California, San Diego.
Gout is a painful and potentially disabling form of arthritis. Initial symptoms usually consist of painful swelling in single joints, especially the big toe.
Rilonacept -- a new drug being tested in the treatment of inflammatory conditions -- prevents a protein called interleukin-1 from attaching to cell surface receptors and causing disease flare-up.
The patients in the study received twice-weekly injections of a placebo, followed by six weekly injections of rilonacept. In the second through eighth week of treatment, 70 percent of the patients had at least a 50 percent improvement in pain, and 60 percent of the patients had at least a 75 percent improvement in pain. There was no improvement in pain when the patients received the placebo.
By the eighth week of treatment, there was a 59 percent decrease in inflammation levels.
The study was to presented Nov. 9 at the American College of Rheumatology meeting in Boston.
This study did not include a natural herbal gout remedy.

Sterling Silver Jewelry
Your fine quality silver gemstone jewelry will last a lifetime and can be passed down as heirlooms for future generations.
Silver is one of the world's most useful metals as well as one of the world's most valuable metals. Most silver jewelry is silver combined with other metals Typically, sterling silver consists of 92.5 percent silver and 7.5 percent copper. This makes it more suitable for wearable jewelry.
Wear your jewelry to help prevent tarnish; wearing and handling will slow the oxidation process and keep your silver shiny and new looking. Over time oxidation reactions will occur, especially with sulfur and oxygen, causing silver to become tarnished.
Minimize scratches by storing your jewelry in cloth pouches, small plastic bags and in separate compartments in your jewelry box.

A lace front wig is a wig made with human hair tied
to a lace base. The two types of lace used in lace front wigs are
French lace and Swiss lace. A "lace front" wig has lace at the hairline
(ear to ear) that is secured with liquid adhesive or tape. When the
lace is adhered to your own hairline, it gives an invisible hairline,
making it look as though the hair is growing out of your scalp.
We offer wigs that are lace front (lace at the hairline, from ear to
ear) and full lace (entire wig base is made of lace).
